The Night of Museums and Galleries was first organised in Plovdiv in September 2005, using the popular European format. The first edition of the festival was immensely popular with audiences in Plovdiv and was critically acclaimed as one of the most important out-of-the-capital art events for the year (the Kultura Weekly, the Arts Survey 2005). It was included in the British Council’s Mapping of Creative Industries in the City of Plovdiv research and used as a case study in the publication The Creative Industries in Plovdiv – an Economic Approach. In March 2006 the Night of Museums and Galleries – Plovdiv was showcased within the Days of Bulgaria at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Vesselina Sarieva, originator of the Plovdiv Night, was awarded the Art Fact of the Year Award of Bulgarian art journalists.
