Bulgarian Princesses - A performance by 1 magazine and Mariela Gemisheva’s fashion class at the National Academy of Art
/Exhibition/
The performance by 1 magazine and Mariela Gemisheva’s fashion class at the National Academy of Art will be shown for the first time especially for the NIGHT in Plovdiv’s most characteristic bar. The campaign was triggered by the scandal caused by Kalina Saxe Coburg Gotha donating her wedding dress to the National Historical Museum and its public display as a museum exhibit. In response 1 magazine invited the group of students to design a collection of wedding dresses which they presented as a performance at The Red House Centre for Culture and Debate in Sofia on 22 January 2005. After the “fashion show” the dresses were donated to the National Historical Museum. The videos are complemented by information published about the performance and comments about the event.
Wedding dresses feature in many of Mariela Gemisheva’s performances as attributes or symbols so it was no coincidence 1 magazine invited her. The first presentation of documents of the event at Nylon was prepared by Gemisheva especially for the NIGHT and includes another one of her wedding works, Wall Cussion of 2015 as well as music by Madonna selected for the occasion.
