In „Nature”, his new exhibition, the famous Bulgarian artist Nedko Solakov seems to be striving for the very source of modern art – plein air painting, the work made under the open skies, in a natural setting.
The artist gets out of his studio, dedicating a series of otherwise customary walks through the woods to observation with the help of pencil and paper. The result of this encounter is an installation comprising a spectacular large-scale photography of the Balkan range, shot by Dimitar Sokolov, and twelve plein air drawings. To help the spectator identify the locations against the dark outline of the mountain, they are all marked and numbered – an innovative, user-friendly communication tool that furthers the ideas of classical plein air painters while enticing into a labyrinth of meanings, historical references and artistic transgressions.
